The Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 is a fabulous small trawler, capable of trawler speeds, but able to get up on the plane and outrun any weather at 19 knots.  This model was thrust into the limelight in 2012 when, by way of introduction to the US Market, Beneteau and a number of industry partners sent a Swift Trawler 34 on the Great Loop.  The trusty ST 34 named ‘The Greatest Loop’ made a rapid trip around the “loop” between May and September of 2012, starting and ending in Annapolis.

The shape of the underbody, along with bowthruster, sternthruster and trim tabs make this vessel stable, maneuverable and comfortable. The owners of Southern Comfort extended the keel aft by a couple of feet and down by 6 inches at the bow to better protect the propeller if the boat should ground. This unique feature allows Southern Comfort to track even better than other ST34’s.

Flybridge and interior helm stations make for comfortable cruising in all weather and the asymmetrical deck layout, with open side deck to port and covered side deck to starboard with high bulwarks for safe passage from cockpit to side door at the helm.  Both side decks allow safe and easy movement to the bow. The single Cummins 425HP diesel engine sips fuel and makes this a really economical vessel to run. On ‘The Greatest Loop’ it was reported that the vessel used 5 gallons per hour at 11 knots.

The interior is light and visibility is phenomenal thanks to windows all round.  The windscreens each have a large wiper to keep them clear in inclement conditions.  There is plenty of room to move about in the salon and the accommodations up forward are extremely comfortable, with an enormous owner’s cabin, good sized head and bunk cabins. The main salon also has a very comfortable sleeper couch for two.

The current owners purchased Southern Comfort new in 2013 and have cruised extensively on the Chesapeake Bay and the East Coast.  It has been extremely well maintained and there are several adaptations for making tasks/life on board a little bit easier.  There is ‘a tool for that’ for everything. Southern Comfort is hauled annually for maintenance, bottom painting, replacement of anodes ,engine servicing etc.

Accommodations

This vessel is light and has fantastic visibility from the interior. Entry can be made through a sliding door from the cockpit or one next to the lower helm.  The salon is situated just inside the cockpit door, with storage down the port side and a table and settee to starboard.  The settee folds out to form a double berth.  The table has a heavy base, to which the owner has attached wheels, so it can be moved elsewhere as needed. Below the floor of the salon is a hatch which give provides access to the engine compartment.

Forward of the salon is the galley to port and the lower helm to starboard.  The Galley has a 2-burner propane cooktop and microwave as well as sink & fridge.  A custom shelf has been installed above the stairs that lead to the bow.  This provides further storage.

The helm has a double seat with fold-out foot rest.  Wheel and dashboard with all the instruments are easily visible and accessible as is the starboard side deck, from the sliding door.

Step down between the galley and helm to the sleeping quarters and head.  The head is to starboard, guest cabin with single bunk beds and storage is to port. The owners cruise a lot, so they use this cabin as a storage cabin so have removed the mattresses and have them stored at home. The main cabin is in the bow. There are large storage closets port and starboard and a very comfortable V-berth with countertop on either side. Opening hatch & portlights in the hull.
