PAPAYA is a solid example of the popular Pearson 424, in the Sloop configuration for short-handed sailing ease and efficiency. This is a very popular cruising boat with good fuel and water capacity, good sailing performance, ICW capability, offshore capability, and a strong reputation in the liveaboard community.
Papaya is very well kept with many desirable features and many recent upgrades, including: new electronics, new autopilot, new radar, great ground tackle, new propane system, bow thruster, rewired mast, LED nav and cabin lighting, heat/AC, DC refrigerator/freezer, propane cabin heater, dinghy davits, serviceable cruising sails including a fully battened main and a 150% furling genoa, and an asymmetrical chute in a sock. She is just back from a winter spent between Cape Cod and Key West and is ready to go again. The licensed captain owner reports her to be a comfortable boat at sea that delivers a good turn of speed and excellent reaching performance, with a dry comfortable cockpit big enough to sleep in.
Down below the layout is great for one or two couples or a couple with kids. There are two separate double cabins, two heads, a standup dedicated shower stall, and two companionways, one to the cockpit and one to the deck. The large salon table seats 6 comfortably and the large cockpit table makes dining in the cockpit a nice choice in pleasant weather.
This boat has a 75 hp turbocharged Yanmar diesel engine that was installed in 2006 and has less than 1,600 hours, with regular maintenance and a lot of love from the knowledgeable owner. She is driven by a nearly new 19” feathering stainless Autostream prop. She motors comfortably at 6.5 knots at 2500 rpm and will reach 8 knots when needed. It also has a Vetus Bow Thruster for those tricky docking situations.
The cockpit is a wraparound arrangement comfortable for both sailing and lolling. High seat-backs provide good support and a large coaming keeps water on deck from entering the cockpit. The cockpit has a lot of hatches: two lockers port and starboard for sails or docking gear, a lazarette aft with more stowage, and a stove fuel locker for bottled gas (in this case LP gas) that is vented overboard for safety. Down the aft main companionway a double berth lies to port with plenty of lockers for storage. To starboard is the chart table with a swing out seat, which stows away when not in use. Below the companionway steps is the engine compartment. To starboard and forward is a head with a standup shower stall, toilet and sink basin. Forward to port is the U-shaped galley area with a large single sink, ample storage above the countertop, and LP stove / oven and an ice box with built in refrigeration with freezer. From the galley forward is the main salon with a dinette with seating to port and starboard, and more storage lockers on each side. A V berth lies forward, with a hanging locker and head to starboard, and a wash basin to port. All bare fiberglass is covered with teak and her cabin sole is teak and holly.
