Anchorages To Try: Up the Rappahannock

If you’re ready to venture a bit upriver from Deltaville, the Rappahannock River offers no shortage of peaceful gunkholes, charming towns, and breezy afternoons on the hook. This stretch is full of character—whether you’re looking for quiet solitude, a place to walk your dog, or a dock-and-dine kind of day.

Here are a few of our favorite anchorages in Urbanna, the Corrotoman, and Carter’s Creek near Irvington:

The Corrotoman River – Scenic & Secluded

With two winding branches and plenty of anchorable coves, the Corrotoman is a favorite for a reason. It’s peaceful, well protected, and full of character.

  • Sandy Point
A scenic and spacious anchorage, especially popular with boaters cruising with dogs. There’s a sandy beach perfect for stretching legs, and while it gets some boat traffic on weekends, there’s typically room for everyone. Great hurricane hole. Solid Verizon cell signal.
  • Bells Creek
A quiet, lovely creek ideal for spring and fall. It’s well protected, making it a reliable stop in heavier weather or during shoulder season cruising. Not much breeze in summer, but still a gem when the timing is right.

Urbanna Harbor – Charming & Convenient

Looking to stroll a small town, do a little shopping, or grab a bite to eat? Urbanna has all that and then some, with the bonus of a calm anchorage and easy dinghy access.

  • Urbanna Creek (East Side)
Anchor in 8–10 feet of water with fair holding in soft mud. There’s a town dinghy dock by the boat ramp—just be courteous and keep your tender tucked out of the way. It’s a short walk into town, where you’ll find coffee, seafood, gifts, and a good dose of waterfront charm.

Carter’s Creek – Resort Vibes & Quiet Corners

East of the Corrotoman, Carter’s Creek offers a mix of upscale appeal and peaceful hideaways. It’s a great spot for a quiet night or a touch of luxury at anchor.

  • Yopps Cove
A classic anchorage with good holding and room to swing. Some exposure to southerly winds, but a solid choice for fair weather. It’s just a short dinghy hop to the Tides Inn, if you’re in the mood for a drink with a view.
  • Dead and Bones Cove
Tucked away on the west branch of Carter’s Creek, this cove is a scenic and quiet option. Mud bottom, fair wind protection, and a serene setting make it a favorite among repeat cruisers.

Whether you’re seeking solitude, dog-friendly shores, or a spot to dress up and go ashore, the Rappahannock River has something for every cruiser’s style. These anchorages are just a starting point—keep exploring, and let us know where you find your next favorite.
