Cruising through Deltaville: Favorite Anchorages on the Piankatank River

If you’re looking for a few short hops around Deltaville, the Piankatank River offers some of the best spots to drop the hook — whether you have a weekend, a few days, or just a night to spare. Here are some of our favorite local anchorages to explore.

Jackson Creek (East and West)

Most cruisers know the eastern arm of Jackson Creek — once you navigate the winding channel (stay sharp, but it’s worth it), you’re a quick dinghy ride to Deltaville Boatyard and Jackson Creek Marina.

If you’re looking for something quieter, head to the western arm. There’s less boat traffic, beautiful homes along the shoreline, and a view back across the spit toward Fishing Bay. It’s a peaceful, protected spot — perfect for a low-key evening on the hook.

Fishing Bay

Fishing Bay is well-known among Chesapeake cruisers — and for good reason. With deep water, plenty of swinging room, and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, it’s a favorite stop for snowbirds in spring and fall. Shore access is easy at Fishing Bay Marina or Zimmerman Marine, and you’re likely to meet a few fellow sailors along the way.

Godfrey Bay

Tucked along the southern bank of the Piankatank, near Gwynn’s Island, Godfrey Bay is a quieter anchorage if you’re looking for a little more solitude. It’s a great spot to watch the sunset and a nice alternative to the more popular anchorages around Deltaville.

Queen’s Creek and Milford Haven

Feeling adventurous? Head through the Gwynn’s Island swing bridge and explore Queen’s Creek or Milford Haven. From Milford Haven, you can dinghy over to Hole in the Wall — a sandy island perfect for beach walks — or grab a meal with one of the best waterfront views in the Southern Bay.

Horse Point and Beyond

Sail west up the Piankatank past Horse Point and you’ll find some of the best flatwater sailing in the area. Keep going and you’ll reach a high-sided bay surrounded by woodlands and a few tucked-away homes. It’s off the beaten path — and well worth it if you want a quiet night away from the crowds.

Wilton Creek

If strong weather is in the forecast, Wilton Creek offers one of the best hurricane holes around. Just before the Piankatank bridge, make a sharp turn into the creek and you’ll find excellent protection and calm waters, even when the Bay kicks up.

Next month we will share a few more of our favorite anchorages on the Rappahannock River.
