The Valiant 42 is the quintessential cruising boat. Designed by Robert Perry for short-handed, long-distance sailing/cruising, its superb sailing characteristics are well-known. It is extremely well-balanced and sails fast and flat with little leeway.
It has several features that make it desirable for people planning to ‘live the dream’ either permanent or seasonal. The exterior is low maintenance and safe. Decks are fiberglass with non-skid; the toe-rails are aluminum; hard-top dodger with heavy duty stainless steel supports and isinglass windows; lines come back to the cockpit; cockpit is deep and separated from the rest of the deck by the elevated coaming & excellent drainage; the canoe stern deflects water in following seas. The interior has extensive storage, comfortable accommodation with a 2-cabin 1-head layout; a sea-safe galley; large chart table with electronics array easily accessed; hand-holds throughout; head, with shower; excellent ventilation through 6 hatches and 11 opening portlights.
‘Seiche’ (hull # 126) has been cruised extensively, with refurbishments in 2011 and 2016, as well us upgrades since 2022. The sought after side entry which allows a larger aft cabin to port companionway leads down to a short vestibule with three, large storage lockers to starboard and the aft cabin. The honey colored interior teak is what is what first catches the eye. The varnish glows and the joinery is superb. The teak is contrasted with white headliner, cabin-sides and galley bulkhead and the large stainless steep portlights.
The aft cabin has a double Pullman-style berth, storage below the berth, lockers with shelves, situated above double doors that provide engine access. There is plenty of room to stand, an overhead hatch and 2 opening portlights for ventilation and a door that leads into the vestibule.
The engine compartment can be entered through a hinged door behind the companionway stairs. This allows remarkable space to access the engine as well as the starting battery and much of the equipment associated with the electrical, electronic and mechanical systems.
Forward of the vestibule, to starboard is the forward facing nav station with full sized chart table, cushioned bench with storage beneath, electrical panel and electronics on the hull side. To port is the well appointed, U-shaped galley with separate fridge and freezer (SeaFrost 110v/engine driven), sinks, stove, counter workspace and custom storage cabinets.
Forward of the galley is the L-shaped settee which can pull out to form a double berth. There is a water tank below the settee and storage above and behind. The sturdy salon table is centerline with leaves that fold up. To starboard is a straight settee with water tank below and storage above and behind.
The forward bulkhead has a door which leads to the head and V-berth. The storage to starboard includes a cedar hanging locker in the vestibule and locker with shelves in the cabin. To port is the head, with basin, Groco toilet and shower.
The V-berth and thus the forward section of the boat was lengthened by 6 inches to accommodate a longer berth and more storage, which includes cabinets & bookshelves at the aft ends of the V-berth and cabinets down each hull side. The hull sides between bunk and cabinets is lined with ash strips . An overhead hatch and the large portlight to starboard provide provides ventilation and a door at the foot of the bunk gives access to the chain locker.
