Hesper is an absolute gem. Both interior and exterior are brimming with classic boat details. She was designed by Bill Garden who was famous for his Willard hull designs. She has a roomy circular cockpit and can be helmed from cockpit or from inside the wheelhouse. The boat has been immaculately maintained and is a delight to see. Current owners are the third owners and the boat has been cruised extensively up and down the east coast from Newfoundland to Bahamas.
The boat was laid up by Tillotson Pearson in solid fibreglass to very stout scantlings in 1975, and carefully stored indoors for 20 years.
She was bought and finished by two very experienced shipwrights and was launched in 1996, hence the hull number is 1975 but coastguard documentation is 1996.
The current owner and his family (since 2010) describes her performance as motorsailer as follows:
“Time on HESPER is always worth spending. Whether motoring to drop anchor in a cove during the Fourth or heading out in higher winds for full sail, she offers a steady sail and comfortable space to enjoy with friends of family”
“Wind under 10k: Very pleasant motoring.
Wind 10-15k: Motor-sailing w/ engine running between1000-1500 rpm.
Wind 15-25k: The really sweet spot – sailing under full canvas. The boat has an easy motion – not at all phased by any sea conditions encountered.
Wind over 25k: Shorten sail or just power-through w/ 60 hp diesel”
In addition to being an able ocean going vessel Hesper could also be easily used for exploring rivers and canals. Her deck stepped mast which can be lowered using only equipment on the boat, and her draft is only 3’6″. This might be your perfect boat for the Great Loop.
The key to Hesper is quality and simplicity – every detail having been thought out carefully and logically for easy use and maintenance, nothing missing, nothing extra. A boat to use and to love.
