The Bristol 45.5 Center Cockpit is an iconic Hood cruising boat design. Spacious and well appointed, both on deck and down below. The cockpit, is deep, safe and comfortable, with sail handling winches close at hand.  Wide side decks allow easy movement on deck from bow to stern.  The modified transom on Pearl makes her more like the 47.7 with the large aft cabin and 47′ LOA. The weight of the boat and the design of the hull make this vessel comfortable and sea-kindly and with the centerboard down, the performance is superb. With the centerboard up, you can gunkhole in all those out-of-the-way places.

Pearl was built in 1983 for a very knowledgeable owner who had her built to race in offshore regattas.  After she was launched “Willoway” was modified to eliminate the two swivel chairs replacing them with a settee/sea berth to starboard with ample storage underneath.  He also extended the stern to create the “convertible” aft berth which provides for an athwartship queen or two fore/aft sea berths.  After 14 years and distance races along the East Coast, to Bermuda, and the Caribbean, she was sold to the second owner who moved on after 3 years, selling her to the current owners in 2000 .

The current owners have cruised extensively, from Maine to the Bahamas.  They have had the boat professionally maintained and upgrades have been common sense, detailed & practical, improvements (with quite a bit of redundancy built in) that have suited their cruising lifestyle and will make that of the next owners more comfortable.

Accommodations

The Bristol 45.5 interior is inviting and spacious. Teak trim, with teak and holly soles that have been re-finished, and white bulkheads and cabin liner make it light and yet traditional.

The companionway stairs are teak and stainless steel and lead into the salon. Step down from salon to galley, starboard. The galley is  U-shaped and compact, it is tucked away and easy for the cook to brace in a seaway.  It is well appointed with plentiful storage and refrigeration.

To port of the companionway is the walkthrough to the aft cabin. The nav station is on the hull side of the walk way and the electrical panel with storage below.

Step through a door which shuts off the aft cabin, into a passageway with access to the engine room on the midships side and extensive storage on the hull side. The bunk runs across the full width of the boat, but can be reconfigured to form 2 single berths. This vessel is unusual in that the original owner specified the fuel tanks to be positioned under the aft berths rather than below the floorboards. The aft head is to starboard, it has a large basin, vacuflush toilet, separate shower and lots of storage.

The Salon is extremely spacious and light.  It has an L-shaped settee to port, with the teak dining table positioned slightly off center, close to the settee. It has a short leaf on the port side and a longer leaf on the starboard side so that it can reach the starboard settee when raised. The salon cushions are upholstered with blue ultra-suede and have fitted light blue ‘day-to-day’ Sunbrella covers that can be easily removed and washed.

Six water tanks are located beneath the floorboards, with a manifold in the forward bilge. Extra storage is located 1) on the forward end of the starboard settee and 2) on the aft end of the starboard settee.  The lower portion of the port storage has an ice-maker which does not work as an ice-maker, but is a good, small freezer; this could be removed and an airconditioning unit installed in the space.

The forward head is to port, with Raritan PHII toilet (tied in to the Electra-scan Hold & Treat System), basin and pull-out shower. The forward cabin has storage port, starboard and under the bunk. The bunk is a large V-berth with thick mattress and a filler cushion that can be removed.
